Al-Anon Family Groups Infomation Services

Living with an alcohol addicted person is not easy. Their actions impact all of those around them.  Sometimes their use leads to the loss of employment, financial security and even homes. Though alcohol abuse does not directly cause violence, the addict does, that being said the high correlation between the two might result in destruction or harm to themselves or others. Even when the effects are not so dramatic life with the alcoholic addict can be difficult with the non-addicted individuals in the family being forced to take on extra responsibilities, sometimes finding themselves in the position of lying or covering up for the alcoholic addict.
These are experiences which are common among families with a drug or alcohol addicted individual. It is important to get support to deal with these situations. Fortunately, there is a support group for the family and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. Al-Anon/Alateen, which is frequently confused with Alcoholics Anonymous, is actually for the family members of the alcoholic/addict. These groups are free and occur on a nearly daily basis in many communities.  For more information on where to find an Al-anon meeting in your area call 1-888-4AL-ANON
Al-Anon Family Groups Purpose Statement
The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.
Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its voluntary contributions.
Al-Anon has but one purpose:  to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic. SOURCE: https://al-anon.org/pdf/preamble.pdf
