Tips for Mental Healing if Your Candidate Loses an Election

Now that the 2020 presidential election has ended, election stress doesn’t cease immediately. The worse outcome that can occur is when you experience mental health disorders after losing your candidate.

During this time, many people often feel anxious about the future, especially what will happen to the economy, pandemic rules, health insurance changes, etc.

Fortunately, you can follow a few tips to promote mental strength and healing after a disappointing election.

Accept the Election Results

Accept the results and what has happened since it’s the initial step to be free from negative thought patterns that might trigger mental disorders.

Acceptance can feel scary, disappointing, and frustrating. But never waste time thinking about how better things will be if your candidate won since the result is irreversible. Instead, change the outcome and move on with your life to stay free from mental health disorder triggers and upsets.

Limit Your Media Consumption

Watching, reading, and listening to outdated or unnecessary elections news will eventually worsen your emotional feelings without doing any good. Remember, media information will never change, and most of them will only intensify your anxiety and despair.

Therefore, the best way is to limit the time you spend absorbing election news while being watchful, where you obtain the news.

Seek for Healthy Coping Skills

Stressful problems after your candidate lose an election may cause irresistible temptations to drink alcohol or binge on entertainment since they provide a form of short term relief. However, people overlook the consequences of overindulging in unnecessary things, which later causes more trouble.

Instead, practice the following healthy coping skills to help you overcome stress:

  • Reading inspirational books
  • Practicing deep breathing and yoga
  • Journaling
  • Performing regular exercises

Applying any of these coping skills will improve your mental well-being both in the short and long-term.

Self-Care or Taking Care of Your Body

You cannot achieve perfect mental healing if you fail to take care of your body. For instance, adequate night sleep, eating a healthy balanced diet, and participating in physical activities could create miraculous healing or minimize symptoms for any negative mental issues.

Proper self-care also involves finding excellent strategies that help you perform at your best.

Concentrate on What You Can Control

The final results of an election are one of the issues that you cannot control. Therefore, concentrating on things you cannot change will only develop emotional or mental distress and make you feel helpless.

However, spending your time on things you can control like self-care, how you spend your time, etc. will significantly eliminate any negative emotions or mental states that build up in your mind.
