Brazil challenges in addressing mental illnesses associated with the teen stage appear to be attempting to shadow the new government led multi-sector intervention but research by Colombia University confirms the danger identified by the government and reveals awaiting danger.
Brazil’s pursuit of optimum mental health wellness is grappling with teens as obstacles.
The historical teen stage mental illness continues to pose a challenge even to the government-led a new intervention way to help their teens.
The Ministry of Health of Brazil in its pursuit to improve mental health wellness in Brazil with a target on its teenagers saw them introduce an online psychiatry first aid called Fique Vivo to ease the creation of a mental health-supportive environment, fight the stigma associated with mental health and promote seeking of treatment.
Fique Vivo is working well, is popular among females and adults and has served About 1,497 users had used the platform by July 2019 after its launch connected these people to mental health services, social networks, and provided recommendations. The unintended users and the majority were people aged 20-64 at 72% and women comprised 73%.
The target population 13-19 year-olds who had used the platform at 16% only and are yet to fully utilize the platform people by July 2019 but yet to be popular among the target people who are the teenagers.
The 16% who have used Fique Vivo continues to create a challenge for the government and private stakeholders’ intervention since they lie and refuse to answer some questions needed for assessment making to present the best treatment option.
The persistence of suicides and self-harm associated with a teen stage in Brazil has over past years shadowed the work of Brazilian psychiatry intervention and continues to impede even the government intervention work to resolve teen suicides in Brazil is was expected by is now showing a strange discovery.
Following the history of teenagers self-harm in Brazil, the government intervention expected low uptake of treatment by teens and put in measures to counter this by contacting the Brazil professional organizations including working in collaborations and have contacted the Brazilian Paediatric Society and Family and Community Medicine Society for their active contribution to further promote the local support and have the intended teenagers to improve uptake of treatment and the success of the mental wellness project in Brazil.
But the sharp differences of treatment uptake where the adults do not encourage the teens in danger to seek treatment is worrying. The Ministry of Health of Brazil, however, factored in such peculiar occurrences and put in mitigation measures of these challenges by going the extra mile to remaining in contact with the people who have used the Fique Vivo and continuing to sends them intervention message alerts on mental health services.
Besides Fique Vivo is designed for those in intense emotional distress situations incapable of rational decision making who normally the society would not expect to be the adults who are popular on Fique Vivo.
A research done by Colombia University that investigated more about the target population behaviour confirmed that the targeting is right and further disclosed that there is impending danger of more deaths and self-harm among the teens since they harbor ideologies against the aim of Fique Vivo by favoring the idea of committing suicide at 95% and 85%, and that they are planning suicide at high percentages of ranging at 88, 89, and 63.6%.
