In a tell-all memoir by actress Demi Moore, she goes deep into her past three marriages, relationship with her parents and more. Inside out, has officially hit the shelves and is shocking everyone who reads it.
During an interview with Diana Sawyer on Monday’s Good Morning America, the Ghost and G.I. Jane actress, 56 describes her troubled childhood and how she managed her two alcoholic parents. She begins to talk about how her mother allowed Demi to be raped at 15, profiting from it for only $500.
Moore went on during the interview explaining how her mother brought her to bars to receive attention from men. She recalls one night when Moore was 15, she came home to an older man waiting for her in their small apartment, only to rape her.
Demi learned after the rape that her mother had given her rapist the key to their place. The man whispered to demi, “How does it feel to be whored by your mother for $500?” Moore, who called it “a devastating betrayal” in the book, finds it hard to accept to this day. Sawyer asked Demi if she believes her mother sold her? The actress replied slowly, “In my deep heart, no. I don’t think it was a straightforward transaction. But she still did give him the access and put me in harm’s way.”
Virginia Guynes, Moore’s mother, was a teen when she had her. Her father Dan Guynes, and their family always moved throughout her whole childhood, which was filled with debt, addiction, and constant abuse. Demi, recalled her mother attempting suicide many times. One specific time Moore was only 12 when she pulled the pilled out of her mother’s mouth to save her.
As time went on, Demi discovered that Dan was not her biological father, leading to her downward spiral of thinking her father did not want her. Not long after, Dan left, leaving Moore and her mother alone. This was when the multiple bar trips began, and the rape occurred. Moore eventually dropped out of high school after the assault and pursued an acting Carrere in Hollywood.
However, her troubles continued to follow. During her interview, she explained how during her first role on General Hospital, she developed an addiction to alcohol and cocaine. In the 80’s she stared in the St. Elmo’s Fire and was ordered to go to rehab by the director and the producer as her addiction began to show. The character she was playing at the time, Jules, also had drug problems.
“I mean — the irony certainly was not lost on me,” she said, describing the trip to rehab in her 20s “a profound gift that they gave me.”
The actress was sober for 20 years before she started drinking again, after meeting her third husband, Ashton Kutcher. As that marriage began to fail, she was 102 pound and began to suffer from drug-induced seizures while partying with her daughter’s friends. Demi was rushed to the hospital and treated. Shortly after the incident, she returned to rehab to become sober again.
“I think the thing if I were to look back, I would say I blinded myself, and I lost myself,” Moore concluded the interview.
Moore’s book Inside Out came out Tuesday.
